Read Mexican Spanish Instantly! No Knowledge of Spanish Required!
In the previous lessons, we introduced you to some phrases you can use during your trip to Mexico. This is the last lesson of the series dedicated to learning from the people around you. In this lesson, we are going to cover “How do you read this?”
In Spanish, “How do you read this word?” is
¿Cómo se lee esta palabra?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) ¿Có-mo se lee es-ta pa-la-bra?
Once more:
¿Cómo se lee esta palabra?
The first word, cómo, means “how.”
(slow) Có-mo.
Cómo.
Next we have se lee translated in English as “to read”.
(slow) Se lee.
Se lee.
Then we have esta, the feminine form of “this”.
(slow) es-ta.
esta.
At the end we have palabra, which means “word”.
(slow) pa-la-bra
palabra
The entire sentence again is:
¿Cómo se lee esta palabra?
You might also like to ask, “How do you pronounce this word?” In Spanish, that’s ¿Cómo se pronuncia esta palabra?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) ¿Có-mo se pro-nun-cia es-ta pa-la-bra?
Once more:
¿Cómo se pronuncia esta palabra?
The new word in this question is pronuncia, which is a form of the verb translated as “to pronounce”.
(slow) Pro-nun-cia
Pronuncia.
Again, it is:
¿Cómo se pronuncia esta palabra?
The literal translation is: “How is pronounced this word?”
When you want to find out the meaning of the word or phrase, ask:
¿Qué significa esto?
“What does it mean?”
Let’s break it down:
(slow) ¿Qué sig-ni-fi-ca es-to?
Once again:
¿Qué significa esto?
The first word, qué, means “what”.
(slow) qué.
qué.
Next we have significa, or “means” in English.
(slow) sig-ni-fi-ca.
significa.
At the end we have esto, which means "this."
Altogether, we have
¿Qué significa esto?
Or, “What does it mean?”
To close out today's lessons, we’d like you to practice what you have just learned. I’ll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you’re responsible for shouting it out loud. You’ll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so !buena suerte! which means “Good luck!” in Spanish.
“How do you read this word?” - ¿Cómo se lee esta palabra?
“How do you pronounce this word?” - ¿Cómo se pronuncia esta palabra?
“What does it mean?” - ¿Qué significa esto?
Alright! That's going to do it for this lesson. Hasta luego.
