Gina: Hi everyone, I'm Gina.
Lucia: And I'm Lucia!
Gina: And welcome to Culture Class Essential Spanish Vocabulary, Lesson 14! In this lesson you'll learn five essential words related to recreation and leisure. These are five popular Peruvian recreational activities, hand picked. You can find a complete list of vocabulary at SpanishPod101.com.
FIVE KEY VOCABULARY ITEMS
Gina: Lucia, what’s our first activity?
Lucia: parrillada
Gina: “barbecue”

Gina:
In Peru, barbecues are mostly popular on holidays or for birthdays. Usually meat, chicken, corn, potatoes, chorizo, and hotdogs are grilled.

Usually in Peru, Sundays are when people stay at home with the family, and spend time together by watching a movie, eating lunch, or going to church.

Gina: “Most young people stay at home on Sundays for a family Sunday.”

Shopping is popular among Peruvian women as a way to get together with friends and have fun.

Gina: “It’s best to shop at a mall where you can find all types of stores like clothing stores, supermarkets, and electronic appliances.”

Gina: “going for drinks”

Gina:
Going for drinks is popular among young people, and they usually go to someone's house, a bar, or even just drink on the street. Beer is the most common drink because it’s cheap, rum and coke is the second most popular, and then Pisco.

Lucia: [normal] Barranco y Miraflores son los distritos más populares para ir a tomar.
Gina: “Barranco and Miraflores districts are popular places to get drinks.”

Gina: “futsal”

Gina:
Futsal is like football but in a smaller pitch made of concrete. It’s played in teams of five and is usually between friends. It’s tradition for the losing team to buy a case of beer for the winning team.

Gina: “Many boys play futsal every Sunday morning.”
