INTRODUCTION
Gina: Hi everyone, I'm Gina.
Lucia: And I'm Lucia!
Gina: And welcome to Culture Class Essential Spanish Vocabulary, Lesson 16! In this lesson you'll learn five essential words related to people and homes. These are five common household items in the Peru, hand picked. You can find a complete list of vocabulary at SpanishPod101.com.
FIVE KEY VOCABULARY ITEMS
Gina: Lucia, what’s our first item?
Lucia: imágenes religiosas
Gina: “religious images”
Lucia: [slow] imagenes religiosas [regular] imagenes religiosas

Gina:
In Peru, more than eighty percent of the population is Catholic, which is why Peruvian houses usually have at least one religious image. This religious image could be of Jesus, the Virgin Mary, or a Saint.
Gina: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Lucia: [normal] La imagen religiosa más común es el "Sagrado corazón de Jesús".
Gina: “The most common religious image is the ‘Sacred Heart of Jesus’.”
Lucia: [slow] La imagen religiosa más común es el "Sagrado corazón de Jesús".
Gina: Okay, what's the next item?

Gina: “gas tank”

Gina:
It’s common in Peru to use gas stoves, but since gas tubes are not yet that common Peruvians use gas tanks. These gas tanks are delivered to homes by gas companies.
Gina: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Lucia: [normal] El balón de gas es instalado por un especialista que viene a casa.
Gina: “The gas tank is installed by a specialist who comes to your house.”
Lucia: [slow] El balón de gas es instalado por un especialista que viene a casa.
Gina: Okay, what's the next item?
Lucia: bidón de agua
Gina: “water container”
Lucia: [slow] bidón de agua [regular] bidón de agua

Gina:
In Peru, drinking tap water is not that safe so usually Peruvians buy containers of clean, safe water. This water container is usually 20 liters.
Gina: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Lucia: [normal] El bidón de agua se encuentra en un dispensador en la cocina.
Gina: “The water container is in a dispenser in the kitchen.”
Lucia: [slow] El bidón de agua se encuentra en un dispensador en la cocina.
Gina: Okay, what's the next item?
Lucia: mortero
Gina: “mortar and pestle”
Lucia: [slow] mortero [regular] mortero

Gina:
Even though they sell mortar and pestle kitchen appliances in Peru, in some Peruvian homes a more traditional type made of rock is used. The more traditional ones are usually passed down through the family.
Gina: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Lucia: [normal] El mortero que mi mamá usa era de mi bisabuela.
Gina: “The mortar that my mom uses was my great-grandmother's.”
Lucia: [slow] El mortero que mi mamá usa era de mi bisabuela.
Gina: Okay, what’s the last item?
Lucia: prensa papa
Gina: “potato masher”
Lucia: [slow] prensa papa [regular] prensa papa

Gina:
Lucia: potato masher is used when making mashed potatoes. In Peru, mashed potatoes are always made from scratch using raw potatoes.
Gina: Now let's hear an example sentence.

Gina: “The potato masher is made of steel.”
Lucia: [slow] El prensa papa es de acero.
