Learn Spanish with SpanishPod101.com! Your Latin American friends have been telling you that you have to visit the grocery store on Monday nights. You ask them in Spanish, “Why is Monday night at the grocery store so special?” They respond in Spanish, “Trust us…it’s singles night! You’ll meet tons of people, all of them single and looking for love.” You reply in Spanish, “In the grocery store? All I’m looking for in the grocery store is bananas and milk. But I’ll give it a try.” So on Monday, you head to the grocery store, walk in, and start browsing the food (and the people). You say to yourself in Spanish, “Wow, my friends were right! There are a lot of single people here!” Just then, someone attractive comes up to you in the produce section and asks, “Do you know how to tell whether these melons are ripe?” Learning Spanish with SpanishPod101.com is the most fun and effective way to learn Spanish! This Spanish Beginner lesson will teach you how to tell someone that you like something in Spanish. We’ll also warn you to be careful about using one particular Spanish word in Latin America. It’s hot stuff! Visit us at SpanishPod101.com where you will find many more fantastic Spanish lessons and learning resources! Leave us a message while you are there!

Hola, amigos…

Pregunta del día:  ¿Te gusta el chile?  ¿Te gusta la comida picante?  Do you like chili peppers?  Do you like spicy food?

¡A mí me encanta la comida picante!  I love spicy food!

Hola Amigos! Si! A mi me gusta la comida picante particularmente con una cerveza fria.

Please forgive the right side up exclamation…I have to figure out my keyboard.

Hi,

I don’t quite understand the conjugation of trabajar in this sentence:

Mucha gente trabaja en la ciudad.

Does this mean many people (plural?) work in the city? Why is it not ‘Mucha gente trabajan en la ciudad’ ?

Hi Tracy,
I couldn’t agree more on the comida picante with a cerveza bien fría. De preferencia una cerveza Victoria, de México o incluso una Club Colombia (aunque la comida colombiana no suele ser picante.) What type of comida picante do you like? And do you have any recommendations on how you pair it with a cerveza?

Regarding your question, the reason the verb is in the third person singular is because ‘gente’ is singular in Spanish, as opposed to the plural for people. Simplified: la gente (singular) = the people (plural). I hope this helps.

Thanks for stopping by, Tracy. Looking forward to your response.

A mi me gusta la comida picante, pero no tanto.

I like spicy food, but not too spicy.

In Mexico I’ve noticed they use “pica” to say something is spicy as well. Or at least in the Northen part of Baja California…

¿La salsa, está pica? No, está pica.

Se me olvide, ¡también me gusta una chela bien fria!
I forgot, I love a nice cold beer too.

Chela is slang for beer, but I think it’s mainly used in Mexico. I could use a Modelo Especial right about now.

DOH, that should have been “No, no está pica” above, sorry!
