Learning to look for and recognize these has been a huge help to me especially in reading Spanish. I still need to increase my vocabulary a lot, but recognizing cognates allows me to read and usually get the gist. As my listening skills increase, I find I'm more able to notice cognates in spoken Spanish, as well as written. I have a paperbook book, Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish, that is mostly about these cognates. It's not a very good general text, actually, but I amaze my new English learners by showing them the thousands of cognates that exist between Spanish and English. They had no idea, and are excited to learn that they "almost know" thousand of English words already!
