Today’s lesson was recorded on-site in Madrid, Spain.

Jajaja…. Very nice blog! It was really cool to hear the “villancico”. Also, It’s quite interesting to learn about the customs of Spain and compare them to those of Mexico, Peru and the US. Chrstmas Eve, that is, Nochebuena, is the larger celebration for my family too, though, both days are dedicated to family gatherings, meals, exchange of symbolic gifts.

The night before last, a group of Christmas carolers rang our doorbell and starting singing songs. I was a little surprised for a few reasons. First, these were young boys, probably around the age of 14; second, this custom has almost disappeared in our culture; and third, it was really cold out! So they sang us a couple of songs and, following the tradition, we offered them some cookies, which they gladly accepted and then went on to the next house.

David says:

Hehe. You don’t know what you are saying… If you say you have liked this song so much, next time I’ll sing the whole “villancico”!

¡Feliz Navidad!

SpanishPod101.com says:

More songs, David! Hehehe…. You should’ve put out a Christmas album! Really, though, I liked this lesson because I had never heard that particular “villancico”, and listening to you sing those two lines made it come alive for me. Very innovative.

Thanks!

Joseph

Oiga David,

(What a good sense of humor! Yeah, I was dying laughing. How about for next Christmas you and I do a counterpoint?!)

(In Peru we wait until midnight on the 24th, Christmas Eve, to begin with the celebration of the birth of God the child, singing carols to later on toast and dine. Of course, as we already know we Latin Americans haves nuances that differentiate us from you and amongst ourselves.)

Saludos,
Beatriz

David says:

Hehe, seeing how much you have liked the “villancico”, I think we’ll have to record some more for next year. Maybe we’ll have to start a “Concurso de villancicos de ambos lados del charco”:

Concurso = contest
villancicos = carols
ambos lados del = both sides of the
charco = (literally pond) in this context = Atlantic Ocean

Muchos saludos,
David.
